What the state insurance guide says
The Kansas Insurance Department Auto Insurance Shopper's Guide, read on November 5, 2026, describes comprehensive coverage as damage not caused by a collision. Its example is a tree branch falling on a car's roof, not a windshield. In the same guide, a separate line called auto glass coverage provides for partial or full coverage of a damaged or broken windshield. The guide also discusses deductibles on comprehensive and collision coverage. It does not say every policy includes glass, and it does not say glass is always under comprehensive. Ask your insurer which coverage, if any, applies, and what your deductible is.
The PDF notes an office change effective January 1, 2024. That is the date printed in the file we read. It is not a promise that your policy uses that date.
You can choose the shop
K.S.A. 40-2,155, read on the Kansas Legislature site on November 5, 2026, says an insurance company that issues or renews a Kansas policy covering a motor vehicle may not require the insured to use a particular company or location for glass replacement, glass repair, or glass products. It also bars intimidation, coercion, threats, or misleading the person into using a particular company.
The statute does let the insurer give you a list, if some of the companies are reasonably close and convenient, and it may limit that list to companies that meet reasonable standards of quality, service, and safety. You may use a company that is not on the list. If you do, the insurer may require up to three competitive bids. The statute says the insurer does not have to pay more than the lowest prevailing market price, which it defines as the lowest market price in a local area. It also says an insurer may agree to pay the full cost. Those are the statute's words. Your policy and your insurer apply them.
Is a claim worth filing?
Put an itemized quote next to your deductible and ask your agent. A small repair can be less than a deductible. A replacement with calibration can be more. This page will not tell you which way to go. Cost factors in Wichita explains the pieces without a local price list.
A National Weather Service hail page for Wichita was not loaded, so this article does not describe a hail season or how often hail falls. If hail breaks the glass, photograph it and call your insurer. Glass and body damage are separate questions for the insurer.
What to ask the pro
- Does my policy include the auto glass coverage the state guide describes, and what is my deductible?
- If I use a shop that is not on the insurer's list, will they ask for competitive bids?
- Does the quote include calibration? See the ADAS page.
- Ask the glass pro what glass they will install, in writing.
